Marshell

I spent whole afternoon in a management meeting that, lasted five freaking hours. Unbelievable. I might just install a game on my phone next time and play the game through. Marshall sure had a lot to say, going on and on like a broken record. Issues that could be clarified immediately were dragged out in the most tedious way. What pissed me off is that he brought up issues I had already addressed the week before my vacation. I’m totally done with him. After that, I attended a NFSM, and following a brief handover with the former toy department manager, it was already 21:00. I missed dinner again. Thus, had to spend six kuai on takeout, which really hurts the wallet. The current issue with toys is inventory, but thankfully, the display chart is almost fully revised. Starting tomorrow, I’m back on the night shift for a whole week. Sigh…

All I ask for is the opportunity to maximize my contribution, but not wasting my precious time and experience on such trivial matters. I was full of ambition to learn how Walmart brilliantly operates a store systematically, but soon realized that once you start working, you simply don’t have the time to ponder these questions. What a helpless feeling.

I have to participate in that damn “cultural contest” tomorrow, which is like: What’s the name of the first dog our founder Samuel M. Walton had? When did he get married? When was his first son born? Reminds me of the Cultural Revolution in the shots of several avant-garde directors. Though indeed, that old guy is impressive. The outing planned for tomorrow has been canceled, and we might postpone it if possible.

Spring 2024

Questions:

i)               What does “MD” mean?

ii)             The author has chosen to censor the word “MD.” Should we also censor it in English?

We had management meeting this whole/entire afternoon, can’t believe it (actually) lasted 5 whole hours. It never lasted this freaking long before, next time I’ll have to install a game on my phone, and I’ll be able to finish it. Marshall talks too much, (even talks more than usual)repeating the same thing over and over again like a turning wheel (like a broken record). He had to choose the most complicated route to address a simple issue, props to him.

I was stuck in the management meeting for the whole afternoon. Five hours! I never had a meeting this freaking long. If I installed a game on my phone, I would have cleared it. (play through to the end) Marshall was really a blabbermouth, like a broken record. It should take very little time to get all the issues across, but he had to say it in the most complicated way.

This management meeting lasted 5 hours, taking my whole afternoon. What the hell, a meeting has never been that long. Next time (I should) just install a game that I can play until the meeting ends. Marshall is so talkative, like a non-stop wheel. He always picks a complex way to explain a simple question.

Having spent the whole afternoon at a management meeting, I can’t believe it stretched out for 5 hours! I’ve never been in a darn long meeting before, I might try to beat a game on my phone next time. And Marshall, man, that guy's mouth is like a runaway train. He could have made the point pithy, but he just had to go the long, winding route.

1e

I just had a freaking long management meeting this afternoon. It lasted 5 hours! Man, I’ve never had such a long meeting. Why wouldn’t I just install a mobile game next time, and the meeting time will suffice to even finish playing a whole game. Marshall is such a loquacious man. He kept talking like a leaky faucet, going on and on about simple stuff that could’ve been explained quickly.

1f

The whole afternoon was spent in the managers’ meeting. Can’t believe it lasted for 5 hours. The meeting had never been so f**king long. Next time I can finish a mobile game. Marshall had so much to say. He kept talking and repeating over and over again. He had to say them tediously even though the problems could be made clear right away.

Questions:

i)               What is the meaning of “I 服了 Him”?

I'm done with him / I'm over with it

ii)             Should 21:00 be written as “21:00” or as “9 pm”?

iii)           What is the meaning of “大洋”?

iv)            What does 熟食 refer to?

v)             How should we translate”唉~~~”?

What was more exasperating was that Marshall already mentioned them a week before my break. I was speechless to him. After that, I attended the Non-food department meeting and handed over work to the former toy director. I couldn’t believe it was already 9 pm and there was no dinner again. I had to spend six dollars to buy cooked food which was so heartbreaking. The current issue of toys was inventory, luckily the display chart of toys had been basically changed. I am going to be on the night shift for a week from tomorrow. Gosh!

2b

What’s even more frustrating is that the problem he had was something I told him a week before my vacation. I give up. I went to a no-food meeting, and it was already 9 PM after connecting with the former toy department manager. Great, another night I missed out on my dinner. I had to get some food from a deli for six big ones. It’s a robbery. The problem we are having at the toy department is the storage, but the planogram is basically finished so it’s all good. I will be working long night shifts for a week from tomorrow. Oh, dear...

2c

What irked me most was that he raised an issue I had already covered in detail the week before my vacation. I'm totally over it. After that, I dropped by a non-food related meeting, then had a brief handover with the previous toy department manager, only to find it was already 9 PM and I'd missed dinner again. Ended up spending six bucks on takeout, which really hurt the wallet. The toy department's current headache is inventory, but luckily, we've nearly finished updating the display diagrams. Tomorrow marks the start of another week of night shifts for me. Sigh.

2d

What’s even worse is that he brought up issues I had already addressed the week before my vacation. I’m so done with him. Then, I went to a non-eating meet-up, and after a quick handover talk with the former toy department manager, guess what, it was already 9 PM, and I missed dinner again! Had to spend six whole bucks on some deli food then...That was a lot! The main issue with toys right now is inventory, but thankfully, the display diagrams are almost all set. Starting tomorrow, I’m back on the night shift for a week. Damn...

2e

What’s even more annoying is that the problems he discussed were already addressed by me one week before my break. He's unbelievable. Then there was the non-food department conference, where I briefly handed over with the former head of the toy department. By that time it was already 9 p.m., I missed my dinner, again. I had to spend 6 yuan for some deli, I really took a hit to my wallet. The only remaining problem for the toy department is inventory management, but thankfully, the layout blueprint is almost done. Starting tomorrow, I’m back on the night shift for a whole week. Oh man...

Question:

i)               How to translate

3a

All I ask for is to be able to maximize my competence, instead of wasting my valuable time and experience on trivial matters like those. I planned to study how such a store like Walmart operates with ambition, but I realized that once you start working, you will have no time to think about this question. It’s helplessly frustrating.

3b

All I asked for was to make meaningful contributions, and not waste my precious time and experiences on trivial things. Initially, I was ambitious and had hoped to systematically study how Walmart was able to run a mall so brilliantly. But as soon as I started working, I realized there is no time at all for such contemplations. It can't be helped.

3c

My only request is to play my part better instead of wasting my precious time on such trivial things. I was ambitious to systematically learn how Walmart runs a shopping mall so successfully. But I soon realized that you don’t have time to think about it once you get to work. So frustrated.

3d

What I only ask for is to better play my role instead of wasting valuable time and energy on these trivial things. Originally, I was ambitious and intended to learn how Walmart successfully operates a shopping mall, but soon I found out that as long as I went to work, there would be no time for me to think about it. I could do nothing about it, which is frustrated.

3e

I ask for is the opportunity to maximize my contribution, but not wasting my precious time and experience on such trivial matters. I was full of ambition to learn how Walmart brilliantly operates a store systematically, but soon realized that once you start working, you simply don’t have the time to ponder these questions. What a helpless feeling.

3f

All I wanted was to maximize my potential and make the most of my abilities, instead of wasting precious. time and experience on such petty matters. I had ambitiously hoped to systematically study how Walmart operates its stores brilliantly, but I quickly realized that once on the job, you simply don't have time to ponder such questions - how frustrating.

3g

My only wish is merely to make full use of my potential, instead of wasting my valuable time and experience on these trivial matters. My original intention to come here was to systematically learn how Walmart wonderfully operates a shopping mall, but quickly I found that as long as I work here, I have no time to think about this stuff. Disappointing, really.

Questions:

i)               What is the meaning of “文化DGM”?

ii)             After you have answered question i), answer this question: What will the English reader experience be if we translate “文化DGM” as “Culture DGM”?

iii)           The source text refers to “那个老家伙”. How to translate this?

4a

Tomorrow, I have to attend the damn “culture competition”. Those questions are ridiculous, like “What was the name of the old Sam Walton’s first dog”, “when did he get married”, and even “when his first son was born”! This reminds me of the “culture DGM” in the scenes shot by several Avant-garde directors. Though the old guy is indeed remarkable. Tomorrow’s plan for outing is canceled. It might be postponed if possible.

4b

Tomorrow we have that god damn “culture game”, and the questions even include stuff like, what’s the name of old Samuel’s first dog, when he got married, when his first son was born! It made me think of the “cultural Rv”[1] shots from those avant-garde directors, though I do admit that old fella is pretty impressive. Tomorrow’s field trip is cancelled, if possible it would just be delayed I guess.

4c

Tomorrow, I need to attend this stupid “Cultural Contest.” They dare to ask us to remember things like the name of Sam’s first dog, the year he got married, and when his first son was born. It reminds me of another “Cultural” happening, the special period of our history featured in many movies by avant-garde directors, even though, without a doubt, that old man kicked ass back then. There’s no way I could go hiking tomorrow. Let’s just take a raincheck.

4d

Goddamn, there is this ‘culture contest’ tomorrow. I can’t believe the questions they are going to ask: What was the name of the first dog the Sams had? When did he get married? And when was his first son born? It kind of reminded me of how some of the Avant-grade directors' incorporation of ‘cultural Яev0luti0n’in their films. Though that old geezer was quite a man. The field trip for tomorrow is canceled and likely to be delayed.

4e

Tomorrow is the darn culture competition. Look at the questions: what’s the name of Old Sam’s first dog? when did he get married? when was his first son born? It reminds me of the Cultural Somethinglution (you know what I mean) in avant-garde films. The old guy does have some talents though. Tomorrow’s picnic plan is off. Maybe it will be postponed.

4f

I will attend the damn “cultural competition”. How come there are questions like these: What’s the name of the Old Sam’s first dog? When did he get married? When was his first son born? That reminds me of the Cultural Revolution scenes of several avant-garde directors, even if that old guy is awesome. Tomorrow’s plan for a picnic is cancelled, if possible, hope I could put it off.
